Valley News – July 24

The Emmaus Youth Track Camp starts today and runs all week over at Emmaus High School. I love the fact that track camps are offered for our young, budding talent, especially in such a strong and active running community such as ours. If any of you have children attending this camp I’d love to hear how things went!

MID-WEEK RACE
Tomorrow night (7/25) is the Peddler’s Village 5k. This is a night-time race which you can walk as well, making this a great family night out. Also available is a Fun Run for kids aged 10 and under. Proceeds benefit the Heart Institute of Doylestown Hospital.

WHO EVER SAID RUNNING AND BEER DON’T MIX?
Be sure to stop by The Finish Line this Thursday for Brooks Pint Night. Beginning at 3:00 pm stop by the shop for Brooks deals and get a Brooks pint glass with your purchase. They’ll even fill it up with beer. Not too bad, huh?

WEEKEND HAPPENINGS
There isn’t much racing action taking place locally this weekend … BUT … next week you can hit up the free LVRR Summer Series 5k in Lehigh Parkway on Wednesday night, and follow that up with the Blue Eagle 5k in Nazareth on Saturday morning (my personal favorite for that fast 5k you’ve been training for this summer). Head out to Reading on Sunday for the Grings Mill Run – a 5k/10k advertised on a 99% flat course with zero traffic. Sounds like a great weekend to me!

OLYMPIC FEVER
Don’t forget that the Olympics begin this Friday with the Opening Ceremonies! Track and Field events begin on Friday, August 3. I’ll post an update later this week of dates and times of events for easy reference.

The Run-down on Newton

Over the weekend The Finish Line hosted a clinic on Natural Running. The clinic was presented by Newton Running, a shoe company which has cornered the market on producing shoes specifically for Natural Running.

What is Natural Running?
In it’s most basic form, natural running is landing on your midfoot and in alignment with your center of gravity. This concept is nothing new. Just watch an elite run and you will see that there is a specific running form that they employ. The problem is that if you have never been coached you may not realize that you aren’t running with good form, thus running naturally.

Can you employ good running form, er Natural Running, in your current shoes? Absolutely! What Newton has done, however, is create a shoe which forces you to run with a midfoot landing. The technology is called Action/Reaction™ technology. It’s meant to reduce impact, return energy, and propel you forward so you can run faster and further. Similar to trail running shoes, Newton shoes have a lug system but only across the metatarsals on your foot. When your foot lands on the ground the lugs actually fall into the shoe (there are empty pockets above those lugs inside the sole) and then bounce back, thus the “reaction” side of their trademarked technology. This technology replaces EVA foam of which you find none in the Newton shoes.

You can read extensively on the Newton website about their shoes and technology. Everything printed there is what was provided in the Newton clinic last Saturday.

Here is the good news: Newton will be returning to The Finish Line periodically for more clinics! I will share the dates for these future clinics as they come available.

Stay tuned!
