Running in the Heat

Heat advisories are imminent as we head into summer and I wanted to take some time to remind you to be smart in the heat and humidity. Just this morning in the local newspaper an article was posted about what to expect weather-wise this summer. According to AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok, “the coming season may not be quite as hot as last year but could very well feel hotter because the air is likely to stay moist and sticky.” I take that as good news since I don’t like the heat and am willing to push through the humidity (no complaints here after this past winter), but there are a few things we can all do to avoid succumbing to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
- Wear light colors and a hat when out running in the sun.
- Choose a shady route to run.
- Run in the early morning when temperatures are usually cooler, or late evening to avoid direct sun. (Remember, use headlamps or light belts!)
- Bring water, or stash some cash in your pocket or sock and stop along the way.
- Know where you can refill your water bottles – water fountains, businesses, your local running store, perhaps.
- Keep your skin cool by splashing it with water from time to time.
- Find a creek and run through it.
- Be okay with walking for a bit when your heart rate begins to rise.
- Take it inside. When the temperatures soar into the 90′s and your only option is to run at noon, hit up the nearest treadmill.

Find a creek and run through it.
OR “Note when your neighbors and those on your route turn their sprinklers on, and plan your run accordingly”
Definitely make a mental note of hoses, sprinklers, etc!
