Let’s Talk Races and Themes

There is a new race series in town and this one looks like a winner!

Run Lehigh Valley is the vision of Rochelle Romeo, a local fitness enthusiast and active member of the ROC Social Club who was looking to do something new and different for the Lehigh Valley. Through a series of Run Lehigh Valley logothemed races, Run Lehigh Valley is hoping to attract a wide variety of runners to their events, from the competitive types to the out-for-a-fun-run types. This means you!

Runners earn points at each event by either placing in a race or by participating in the race’s theme which will include wearing costumes or contributing non-perishable food items which are donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Race points can be earned as follows: earn 10 points for finishing 1st place in a race, second place earns 9 points, third place earns 8 points and so on until there are zero points to hand out – meaning you can earn one point for finishing 10th place male or 10th place female. There are also age group points for the top five finishers in each age group; 10-8-6-4-2 points can be earned.

Additional theme points are as follows:

Ironpigs 5K (6/26) – 1 point for wearing Ironpigs gear, 1 point for each non-perishable food item
Sportsfest 5K (7/17) – 1 point for each non-perishable food item
Trail Race – details still being ironed out
Run Like Hell (10/30) – 2 points for wearing a costume, 5 points for winning a costume category (scariest, funniest, most original or multi-person)

There is one more race which does not earn points, nor will there be a winner but sounds like a great time anyway! The Oktoberfest 5k will be held on October 2nd in Bethlehem and includes six bars along the way. This is more of a hash run and you must be 21 years old to participate. Prizes will be awarded via drawings during the run.

The concept of ‘themed’ race is meant to add an element of fun into the race atmosphere and to even out the playing field. This means that you can be a slower racer but still get 10 points at a race just the same as a first place finisher who earns 10 points for that placement. Points accumulate throughout the series and the overall series winner will receive a vacation getaway for two. How’s that for a grand prize!

The first race in the series is coming up soon! Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 27th and register for the Ironpigs 5k. The race takes place at Coca Cola Park in Allentown at 9:00 am. Register here.
