Kelly Curry
Resides in: Allentown
Years Running: 14 years

What do you enjoy most about running?
I learned to walk with braces on my legs (like Forrest Gump!) and I don’t think anyone could have imagined I’d be a runner! So I’m just thankful that I am able to run. It’s also a huge stress reliever!

What is your biggest running accomplishment and why?

April 2004- Breaking the 3000m steeplechase school record at East Stroudsburg University and qualifying for the DII NCAA National Championships. I had to drop a minute off my best time from the year before and not even my coach thought I could do it! But I was confident in myself and all the hard work I put in throughout the year.

Favorite brand of running shoe?
I always run in Asics, but I race in Nike Zoom Marathoners.

Favorite race distance?
I’ve been drawn to the half marathon lately, but I’ll always love the 3k steeplechase!

Current running goals?
I’d like to break 19:00 in a 5k this summer then break 3:20:00 in the Steamtown Marathon this fall.

What are some things you’ve learned about yourself from running?
I’ve learned that running is a lot like Life. It taught me how to handle pain, how to be persistent, and to never give up even when things hurt. Others are hurting too- you just can’t always see it on their face. Running taught me to be thankful for taking another step, and another breath. Sometimes I fall, but always get back up. The paths I choose can change my life forever. Running taught me not to see obstacles, instead to see opportunities, and finally, it’ll be over before you know it so enjoy the scenery while you can!

What would your family and friends tell us about your passion for running?
Almost 3 years ago, my older brother Tom suddenly passed away when he was 27 from a rare cancer. We were about a year apart and he was one of my biggest fans. He always bragged to people, even strangers, about how crazy his sister was to be able to run marathons, and how proud he was to watch me race. He’d probably talk about the times he’d get home from a party and I’d get home from a run at the same time.
