Kim Hellwig
Age:
30
Resides in: Allentown
Years running: 8 years running, and racing a little over 3 years.  I honestly wouldn’t have gotten into doing races if it wasn’t for a drunk Christmas Eve pact with a friend to do the Fools Run 5k together 3 years ago.  I had done one 5k before that and my friend and I decided to do this one together.  That led to more 5ks and then longer distance races up to half-marathon
Links: Kim maintains a running blog at I Hope I Don’t Get Lost and has a TNT fundraising website

What is your biggest running accomplishment and why?
Each race means something after I cross the finish line.  I may not remember all the 5ks compared to the halfs but I’m only out there for myself so finishing is my accomplishment.

Current running goals?
MARATHON!  Never thought I’d want to do one – after my first half-marathon I was satisfied with that distance and felt it was the biggest challenge I could withstand.  Then something clicked and my mind was set that I was ready. For my marathon I’m participating in the Team In Training program to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

What is your running mantra?
The first couple miles are the worst – get through them and however many more are left you can do.

Best piece of running advice you’ve ever received?
You only grow as a human being if you’re outside of your comfort zone

What gets you excited about running?
New shoes, clothing and gear; but seriously, I enjoy sharing my runs with other people, even if they could care less!  I’m coaching with Girls on the Run this season and am looking forward to setting an example to the girls.  I also get excited to run a race I’ve never done – a new course, things to see, people – it’s what makes each race unique.

What are some things you’ve learned about yourself from your running?
I didn’t realize how much of a Type-A personality I was or that I was so goal-oriented.  I think running has given me more self-confidence and optimism.  I live in an apartment within what used to be a single family home so there is a doorway which is sealed up that I’ve made into my ‘Wall of Motivation’ and have a calendar marking off all the important race dates and my training.  Whenever I do a long run I put a wine or beer sticker on that date.  All the other runs get a star.

What are your favorite training foods?
Peanut butter filled pretzels, French toast, pancakes, Coconut water, chocolate milk, Gu chomps and banana nut muffins - I like sweet things!

    Yeah Kim!

Kim and I met on the Runners World Forums and ran the LVHM together two years ago! She’s awesome and totally deserves some time in the spotlight!

She also appreciates good beer :)

I was a running buddy for Girls on the Run last fall. It is a terrific opportunity to share your passion and inspire young girls. Have Fun!
